Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
