European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
