A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
